Independence Day in Costa Rica

Every year on Sept 15 is Costa Rica's Independence day.  They celebrate with many local parades and lots of red, white and blue.  And we celebrated with a four day weekend!

The kids needed to make a lantren for the night before Independence Day.  At 6:00 the night before it is their custom to sing their national anthem.  After singing, the kids all lite their lantrens and we all walked around the block. It was fun to see all the kids with their lantrens swinging as they walked along in the dark street.

After walking around the block we gathered back in the gym and were treated to some beautiful CostaRican dancing and then some delicious tamales.  Cody joined in with some of his classmates for a couple  dances.

The children have adjusted quite well to school and have made new friends.  They miss their friends from home but are loving Costa Rica.

A typical day for us is leaving for school around 7:15, walking approx. 4 blocks and then the children head off to their classes and Willie and I go to our Spanish grammer class for 2 hours of spanish grammer. After 2 more hours of classes we head home for lunch and to work on homework.  Then at 2:15 we walk back to school for the kids.

After school it is homework and/or sports.  Cody plays soccer and Kortnee is doing gymnastics and Lauren plays volleyball.

Then its dinnertime.  A few hours a week we have a maid who comes to help with laundry, meals and cleaning.  So when she cooks dinner we enjoy enchiladas, rice and beans, fried plantains, and chicken and rice(one of our favorites).  Then more homework (ours and the kiddos) showers and bedtime.

Blessings to each one of you.
